The Palm software platform offers three great ways to use the screen to enter data. First, there is an on-screen miniature keyboard. Simply tapping the virtual keyboard enters data in whichever field you have selected. Next is the letter recognizer. This resides at the bottom of the screen like the virtual keyboard. By using the stylus, it is possible to enter one letter at a time by just writing in a normal fashion. Each letter, number, or punctuation mark is recognized, and then translated on the screen. Finally, there is the handwriting recognition feature. This allows you to write anywhere on the screen, and write in full words or sentences, which are then recognized and translated into typing inside the required fields on the Zire's screen.

To use the features mentioned above, the stylus becomes an important feature, and a replacement Zire Stylus can enhance the feel of this method.
