PDA
Keyboards
There are two
different types of PDA keyboards. The first type attaches at the
bottom of the PDA, and supports the PDA in the upright position. This
allows the user to type on the keyboard, while viewing the screen, and
therefore the text he or she is typing as well. These pda keyboards
connect at the base of the pda, and use the connector which otherwise
is used to synchronize the pda with a desktop or laptop computer.
Because these keyboards connect through this
part of the pda, it is generally impossible to use an external power
source at the same time. Because of this, you can only use the PDA
and keyboard combination as long as the duration of the battery.
Also, because Palm Pda’s differ from Dell or Toshiba, or any other
PDA, these keyboards must be specifically manufactured for each
particular pda. This often means that when a user upgrades to a
different pda they must also purchase a new keyboard.
The second, and much more popular type of pda
keyboard is the infra-red keyboard. This keyboard utilizes a small
stand to hold the pda, and then interacts via the infra-red port.

This
technology closely resembles that of a remote control, and has certain
key advantages. First, it allows the pda to be charged through the
connector, as this is not the means by which the keyboard interfaces
with the pda. Second, these keyboards are self powered with a small
AAA battery, and last for many hundreds of hours on a single battery
alone. Finally, these pda keyboards can be used on a wide variety of
pdas, the only caveat being that they must have an infra-red port
(which all do). As a result, one keyboard can last for many years,
even as the user changes from one pda to another. These
keyboards can be found for sale on our
